You'll find links to a few major German newspapers and magazines, covering the whole country from Der Spiegel (Hamburg) down to Die Süddeutsche Zeitung (Munich). Austrian and Swiss media will follow in the near future.

Der Spiegel is a weekly news magazine, published in Hamburg and intended for the serious reader. The language is not pitched for a mass audience, and they do not compromise on this. Try to keep away from the English language area on the website:-)

Der Tagesspiegel is a daily broadsheet published in Berlin, roughly equivalent to the Guardian in its politics. Although the name translates as the Daily Mirror, it is in no way similar to its redtop English namesake. The Tagesspiegel homepage also has a permanent link to the rbb TV news (Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg), one of the TV stations serving Berlin and surrounding area.

Die Süddeutsche Zeitung is published in Munich every day except Sunday, and is the leading Bavarian broadsheet. Although it has a definite Bavarian slant, it is an internationally minded, serious newspaper.

Die Berliner Zeitung is a broadsheet published in Berlin every day except Sunday. Although it was originally established in the Soviet controlled sector of the city just after the war, it is now an established and respected member of the Berlin media scene.

Die BZ is a typical redtop (including their equivalent of the page 3 pinup), albeit with a German slant. Not the newspaper for serious reading, more a glimpse into the more downmarket side of German culture, with an emphasis on sport, celebrities, local Berlin crime and the froth of life in the capital. This was the favourite newspaper of working class Berlin during the years of the Wall - hated by the left, the student revolutionaries and the 'Autonomen' of Kreuzberg.
